Citizenship @ DarwinCitizenship at Charles Darwin is taught at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Students have the opportunity in year 10 to choose to complete a short course GCSE in Citizenship. Students in Year 7-9 will also complete a term of Citizenship studies. Citizenship helps prepare students for dealing with real life situations; looking at current issues relating to politics and the economy. Students will be encouraged to look at their rights and responsibilities and how they can make a difference. Citizenship at Charles Darwin is an extremely innovative subject and encourages active learning. At Charles Darwin we have an annual Citizenship day where all students are taken off timetable and complete a number of activities relating to Citizenship. This year we had a Drugs and Sex seminar for year 10, a recycled fashion show designed and produced by the sixth form. Year 11 where given the responsibility of hosting their own team building day for the new intake of Year 7’s. Issues that were raised that were current, relevant and made students think wisely about real life current situations. These included Bullying, Racism, and Environmental problems. The Citizenship Department also like to invite external guest speakers to talk to the students already this year we have had the Bromley Magistrates presenting to Year 11. Citizenship broadens students’ horizons as well as understanding that society needs people to contribute effectively in a variety of ways; students will understand whole range of issues that are affecting young people today. Students at Charles Darwin will have a number of decisions to make throughout their life from opening a bank account, to voting in an election students through Citizenship will equip these students with vital skills needed for the future. Students are encouraged to use this website, to look at the latest news stories voice their opinion on Citizenship Issues in the forum and check out the useful revision pages.
