Sports Award Evening
What a fantastic night! Last Thursday’s Sports Award Evening was the best ever. Following a similar format to last year, the formality of the evening created a real impression of achievement, success and pride. The students were absolutely impeccable in their dress, behaviour and attitude. It made it one of the most slickly organised and above all enjoyable evenings ever. Unfortunately our guest speaker (Crystal Palace player Paddy McCarthy ) was unable to attend at the last minute due to a change in training schedules. I stepped in but as a sport-person was a rather poor substitute (imagine expecting U2 to be headlining a festival and getting Jedwood instead). Fortunately Dave Williams was able to lengthen his own speech by recounting his days in the Marines. (At this point I was of course feeling even more of an imposter.) Dave spoke about his training regime and I don’t know if it was the heat in the hall (it was absolutely baking) or merely his memories but he burst out sweating at the mention of it. The stars were however the students and it was a real privilege to present them with their different awards, trophies, medals and colours. My thanks to David and to Katie Farrell who was a superb organiser of the evening. My thanks also to Sixth Former Sam Gillett who took charge of the video presentations, to Joe Tracy for doing the lights and to the “Friends” Karinne Marshall and Danny Papandreou for providing refreshments. Finally of course my thanks to the rest of the PE team, Matt Ramsey, Joe Dolan, John Burtonshaw, Vicky Bull, Sarah Wheeler and Louise Rees for all their contributions in getting such achievement from our students and to their team manager and helpers. All in all a superb endorsement of a talented bunch of people – both staff and students. |

Lillian Groves
We have been shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Lillian Groves who was a Charles Darwin student until earlier this year. Her Form Tutor, Tony Page, said “Lillian was a quiet, shy girl who had a small but very close knit friendship group. She will be missed by her form who are devastated by her young life being cut short. She was always eager to please and had a happy personality and a ready smile”. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lillian’s family at this sad time. Sports Day
